About

Why Choose Our Ceremonial Grade Matcha?

  • First Flush Quality: First Flush Matcha refers to the very first harvest of the season, where the youngest and most tender tea leaves are carefully hand-picked. These leaves are prized for their exceptional quality, vibrant green colour, and delicate flavour profile. This meticulous process ensures the highest concentration of nutrients, including antioxidants, chlorophyll, and L-theanine, which are naturally more abundant in these early-harvested leaves.
  • Sustainably Grown: Japan is globally recognised as the gold standard of matcha, owing to its centuries-old traditions, meticulous cultivation methods, and dedication to quality. When your matcha is sourced from Japan, you’re assured of its authenticity, premium quality, and adherence to time-honoured practices that elevate the final product. Japanese matcha production is guided by strict quality standards, with a focus on sustainability, organic cultivation, and pesticide-free farming. This ensures a pure and health-conscious product.
  • Enhanced Flavour & Nutrition: In Japan, tea plants are carefully shaded for weeks before harvest, which enhances the production of chlorophyll and L-theanine, resulting in the bright green colour and naturally sweet, umami-rich flavour associated with ceremonial matcha. Our matcha is shade-grown for 20 days, maximizing chlorophyll, L-theanine, and antioxidants.
  • Artisan Craftsmanship: Our farmers use centuries-old techniques to stone-mill matcha into a fine, silky powder. This precise process preserves the nutrients, aroma, and taste while ensuring a consistent, smooth texture.

For a truly luxurious experience, pair your matcha with our Chasen Bamboo Whisk and Scoop, to create the perfect frothy and aerated cup.

Benefits

Ceremonial Grade Matcha is the highest-quality matcha, with a refined flavour, vibrant colour, and smooth texture. Culinary grade matcha is lower quality, typically used in cooking and commercial preparations, and lacks the vivid flavour and colour of Ceremonial Grade due to shorter shading and different harvesting methods.

  • Rich in polyphenols, chlorophyll, L-theanine, and natural caffeine, all of which support brain function and energy levels.
  • Sweeter, more creamy and umami due to the leaves being hand-picked, with stems removed.
  • Vibrant green colour.
  • More potent in antioxidants, essential nutrients and L-Theanine.
  • Shade grown for 20 days, boosting chlorophyll production.

Ceremonial Grade Matcha vs Culinary Grade Matcha

Culinary Grade Matcha (available at most cafes):

  • Dull yellow or brownish-green colour.
  • Bitter, grassy flavour with a coarse, grainy texture.
  • Best suited for cooking, baking, and blending in recipes where matcha is mixed with other ingredients.
  • Lower in antioxidants and nutrients compared to ceremonial grade.

Ceremonial Grade Matcha:

  • Vibrant, rich green colour from high chlorophyll content.
  • Sweeter, creamier, and umami flavour, as the youngest leaves are carefully hand-picked and stems removed.
  • Premium quality, ideal for traditional tea preparation or ceremonial drinking.
  • Higher in antioxidants, essential nutrients, and L-theanine, providing energy and calm focus.

Impact

Our Ceremonial Matcha is sourced from small, family-owned farms in Japan, where traditional cultivation methods are preserved. By supporting these growers and paying above-average prices, we ensure the sustainability and quality of this rare matcha, while honouring the craftsmanship and dedication that make it a premium product.

The Art and Science Behind Ceremonial Matcha Pricing

Producing high-quality Ceremonial Grade Matcha is a labour-intensive art. The tea plants are shaded for weeks before harvest to boost chlorophyll, creating that vibrant green colour and smooth, umami-rich taste. Only the youngest, most nutrient-dense leaves are hand-picked, de-stemmed, and carefully stone-ground into a fine powder. It can take an hour to produce just 50 grams of premium matcha! This meticulous process, combined with traditional techniques and limited production regions in Japan, makes Ceremonial Matcha a rare and precious luxury.
